Getting the first flush diverter sized correctly can be difficult. It depends on factors such as the amount of rain, the difference in time between rainfall, wind intensity, wind direction, and rooftop area. The first flush size, if too big, leads to wastage of the rainwater, and too little still makes the pathogens and particles that were meant to be diverted away enter your main storage supply.

Another difficulty with this is that other factors interfere with predicting the amount of water that needs to be diverted. For example, if the last rainfall was two days ago and another rain is falling today, the water that needs to be diverted using the first flush diverter should be less than if the difference between the last rainfall was days, weeks, or even months! If you follow the above example and divert a small amount of water because the time between rains is short, what if there was high wind speed in an area with excess dry leaves? The amount of dirt on your roof will increase substantially more than someone not living in a windy area and surrounded by leaves, even though the length of time between the last rain and the present was small.
